Programming:
Tonight’s presentation was “Play: How to Express Experimentation in Your Work”. Marah did an excellent job of walking us through her creative process and encouraging us to play more in our own creative process.
Color Challenge: Tonight was the great reveal. Several members shared their projects using the Pantone color of the year, Vivid Magenta and the paint chip color we pulled at random. We had a great variety of projects (see pictures on Facebook and Instagram) and a drawing for a $25 gift card to Sew to Speak won by Dorothy.
Nancy Crow invited us to visit her art barn & retreat center on May 17. We had 5 members attend and were treated to a tour that included a look in on Carol Soderlund’s fabric dye class as well as Nancy’s composition and design class.
The 2023 Modern Quilt Guild Make a Difference Challenge is underway. This year’s theme is “Biodiversity” and benefits the Wild Earth Allies Group. Submissions are due July 17-30. Voting is July 31-Aug 4. Winners will be announced August 7. Visit TheModernQuiltGuild.com website for details.
The 2024 QuiltCon challenges have been announced. Quilt entries will be open from September 1 to October 31. Visit QuiltCon.com/challenges/ for additional details.
Maximalism Exhibit: Make a “maximalist” quilt. This is a juried exhibit, but not judged.
The AP&Q Super Scrappy challenge: Quilts must use at least 30 different fabrics in the quilt top.
Artisan Cotton Challenge: Quilters may use 3-6 of the colors in the palette to create their quilt. No other fabric, neutrals, etc. may be used on the quilt top or binding.
Ohio State Fair: We will be participating in the Quilt category for the state fair again this year. Lissa will provide more information regarding volunteering soon. If you would like to submit a quilt, the deadline to submit your entry form is June 21.
Sew-Ins are scheduled at the Dublin Library on 6/10 and 7/22. Kristin will be at the June 10 sew in and available to help with bag making. Mary will be there to help with dresses for the Dress a Girl Around the World charity project. Lissa will be at the 7/22 sew-in and will bring her oven-mitt die and the blocks from the COSI event for anyone that may want to help put them together into a quilt top.
Charity:
It was decided we will participate as a guild in the 2024 QuiltCon Community Outreach Challenge. The theme is “Symmetry” and we must use 4-8 colors from this year’s palette. You can find details and see the color palette at quiltcon.com/community-outreach-challenge/. Take some time to play and submit your design idea at the July 13 meeting! We will vote on design submissions and work together to construct the quilt.
Our charity project this year is Dress A Girl Around the World program to make dresses for girls in need. Mary provided some patterns we can use for the project and now has the labels. Mary would like to have 30 completed dresses to send off this fall. Suggested patterns are Simplicity 8102, 8101, 2377, 2241 or similar. No zippers, Velcro or buttons, please. Please add colorful patch pockets to the dresses. Visit dressagirlaroundtheworld.com for more information. It was suggested that we allow $300 to help with the cost of the project. This is to cover the cost of the labels, shipping of the dresses, patterns and fabric. The guild will reimburse up to $20/member to help cover the cost of materials to make the dresses. Trish motioned to allow the $300 for the project, Lissa seconded the motion, and the motion passed unanimously.
Other Charity projects that may be of interest include the Amina’s Dream Project which supplies feminine hygiene products to girls so they have the supplies they need and can attend school even while menstruating. If you would like to donate fabric scraps, please bring them to the next meeting for Trish to collect. Fabric must be 100% cotton, no faces or animals (except butterflies).
