Central Ohio Modern Quilt Guild July 2024 Minutes

Submitted by Susan Shuter 07/12/2024

July 11, 2024 – 12 in attendance at the Old Worthington Library.

President’s Report:

QuiltCon 2025 Will take place February 20-23, 2025 in Phoenix, AZ. Registration opens for members on July 31st. Classes tend to sell out fast so your best chance of getting the classes you want is to register right away.

The challenges for QuiltCon 2025 have also been announced. See the national MQG site for more details on how you can participate. The guild has decided we will take a year off from participating in the community outreach challenge.

MQG Make a Difference Challenge is underway. This year’s theme is Pollinators. Submissions will be taken August 5-18 and voting will be open August 21-27. Winners will be announced at the end of August. See the MQG website for more details and challenge rules. Proceeds will benefit Wild Earth Allies.

Again this year, the Central Ohio Modern Quilt Guild will sponsor the 4-H trophies for the quilting division at the Ohio State Fair

Magazines are now available for the 2024 All Ohio Quilt Shop Hop at local quilt shops. The shop hop takes place August-September and there are various prizes for visiting participating stores. The Friendship Quilters guild is organizing a bus tour to many of the shops.

An email was sent to all Retreat participants to sign up for the secret sister swaps. If you registered for the retreat and did not get the email, please let Melissa know through the guild email address, centralohiomqg@gmail.com

Our next meeting will be the Guild Picnic on August 8 at the South Shelter at McCord Park in Worthington. Members should receive an email soon to sign up to bring a dish to share.

Treasurer’s Report

Current balance is $5447.16. $1378.60 is reserved for the Retreat. Last month, we took in $22 for one new member and paid out $150 to reservice the shelter for our guild picnic

Upcoming Programming:

Kathy Faust is hosting a Hand Work sewing circle at her home on the first Thursday of each month at 10am. If you would like to join, please contact Kathy directly or through the guild email address, CentralOhioMQG@gmail.com. All are welcome.

We are starting a scrap challenge to be worked together over several months. Final quilt tops should be completed by the September 2025 meeting. The “Wanderer’s Wife” by Jen Kingwell is the suggested pattern. Cynthia A. is working on FPP patterns from the blocks from this pattern. You may use any “scrappy” quilt designs if you prefer a different design. Finished quilts should be at least 50” x 50” and include at least 25 different fabrics. The idea is to use scraps we already have on hand.

In addition to our scrappy challenge, we have more exciting programming coming up including presentations from Cherrywood Fabrics and SAQA. And we’ll enjoy a picnic together for our August meeting.

2024 Retreat – Mark your calendars for the upcoming fall retreat on November 10-13, 2024. The retreat is now full, but if you are a member and would still like to attend, please contact the guild at CentralOhioMQG@gmail.com and let us know. We will add you to a wait list.

Tonight’s programming was “Negative Space in Modern Quilting” by Augusto Garcia (IG handle @capaquilts). If you missed the video or would like to rewatch it, it is available in the National Modern Quilt Guild resource library on the National MQG website. Next month there will be a small quilt pattern using negative space available on the site and then a full size quilt pattern will be posted in September.

We wrapped up our meeting with Show & Tell. See Facebook and IG for photos of some beautiful projects!
