Submitted by Susan Shuter 08/10/2024

August 8, 2024 – 8 in attendance with 2 young guests for our picnic at McCord Park.

President’s Report:

QuiltCon 2025 Will take place February 20-23, 2025 in Phoenix, AZ. Registration is currently paused due to a catastrophic IT failure. Registration will resume sometime in mid-August and the MQG will advise membership when that will happen with at least 5 days notice.  Per the National MQG, if you were able to register, the “goal is to maintain each registration as-is to the highest degree possible.”

The challenges for QuiltCon 2025 have also been announced. See the national MQG site for more details on how you can participate.

MQG Make a Difference Challenge is underway. This year’s theme is Pollinators. Submissions will be taken through August 18 and voting will be open August 21-27. Winners will be announced at the end of August. See the MQG website for more details and challenge rules. Proceeds will benefit Wild Earth Allies.

The the Central Ohio Modern Quilt Guild sponsored the 4-H clock trophies for the quilting division at the Ohio State Fair. Our guild president, Linda Selby, was honored to present the trophies to the winners at the fair. We even received a nice thank-you note from one of the 4-H entrants.

The 2024 All Ohio Quilt Shop Hop is underway. The shop hop takes place August-September and there are various prizes for visiting participating stores.

An email was sent to all Retreat participants who signed up for the secret sister swap with your assignments. The email is from JMaben. If you did not see the email, please email the guild at centralohioqg@gmail.com so we can have your assignments resent.

Looking ahead we will soon be holding elections for our Guild Board Officers. Positions include, President, VP Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership, Social Media, Fund Raising and Charity. Positions can be shared if you’d like team up with a friend or you can head up a single event, fund raising project, or charity project if you’d like to volunteer on a one-time basis. Please consider joining our board to help shape the future of our guild. We will also need a nominating committee to coordinate the election. We will cover more at the September meeting.

Treasurer’s Report

Current balance is $5432.14.

$42.95 of the retreat budget was spent for supplies leaving $1282.05 remaining for the retreat.

$22.62 was spent for meeting door prizes and $92.30 was taken in from 3 new members.

Programming:

“Fat Quarter Surprise” was tonight’s program at the picnic. We each drew a tone-on-tone fat quarter and talked about what other color on the color wheel would work well with it and what we might make with it. We wrapped up our meeting with Show & Tell. See Facebook and IG for photos of some beautiful projects including those by two young quilters (Emily’s kids) who will be submitting their work for display at QuiltCon 2025!

The Wanderer’s Wife scrap quilt challenge is underway. Final quilt tops should be completed by the September 2025 meeting. The “Wanderer’s Wife” by Jen Kingwell is the suggested pattern, but you may use any “scrappy” quilt design. Finished quilts should be at least 50” x 50” and include at least 25 different fabrics. The idea is to use scraps we already have on hand. If you are making a Wanderer’s Wife quilt and have not been receiving the emails, please email the guild at centralohiomqg@gmail.com so we can get you on that email list which includes FPP patterns for the various blocks.

In addition to our scrappy challenge, we have more exciting programming coming up including presentations from Cherrywood Fabrics at the September meeting and SAQA at the October meeting.

2024 Retreat – Our fall retreat will take the place of our regular November meeting

For our December meeting we will do a scrap challenge gift exchange and pot luck dinner like we did last year. Pull together those scraps and bring them to the September meeting. We’ll fill brown paper lunch bags provided by the guild with our scraps and then exchange the bags. Should you choose to participate, you will have until the December 12 meeting to make a gift for another guild member with those scraps.

July’s program was “Negative Space in Modern Quilting” by Augusto Garcia (IG handle @capaquilts). If you missed the video or would like to rewatch it, it is available in the National Modern Quilt Guild resource library on the National MQG website. There is now a small quilt project using negative space available on the MQG site if you’d like try using the concepts from the July program to make a wall hanging or pillow cover. A full size “Negative Space” quilt project guide will be posted in September.

In the September meeting we will kick off our charity project. We will be making quilted postcards for senior citizens through the “My Dear Friend” program. We will be making these cards for distribution at a Senior Citizen/Nursing home during the holiday season. Please consider making a couple cards to brighten the holidays for some of our older community members. We will have some paper backings to use at the September meeting or you can make your own. The only requirement is that they say “My Dear Friend” somewhere on the card.
