July 14, 2023 – 15 members and guests in attendance at Sew to Speak, including 4 new members.

President’s Report:

We still have a QuiltCon charity quilt from a few years ago. Barb will contact some organizations to determine where it can be donated for a good cause.

Again this year, we are sponsoring the Modern Quilt category at the Ohio State Fair. We will host the exhibit on the last day of the fair 3-6 pm. All members are welcome to join us. Let Barb know if you plan to attend. She has a limited number of tickets and parking passes for members who participate. If you’d like to stay past 6, you can help take down the displays and take home your entries then. Bring something to work on to demo our craft for interested visitors.

Treasurer’s Report:

Our current balance is $4,861. The only June expenditure was the $25 gift card for the winner of the Paint Chip challenge. We welcomed four new members at tonight’s meeting.

Secretary’s Report:

Just a reminder that QuiltCon registration opens August 15 at 10am EDT. If you are a member of our guild, you are a member of the national Modern Quilt Guild as well.

Charity:

It was decided we will participate as a guild in the 2024 QuiltCon Community Outreach Challenge. The theme is “Symmetry” and we must use 4-8 colors from this year’s palette. You can find details and see the color palette at quiltcon.com/community-outreach-challenge/. Take some time to play and submit your design idea at the August 10 meeting! We will vote on design submissions and work together to construct the quilt.

Our charity project this year is for Dress A Girl Around the World, to make dresses for girls in need. We would like to have 30 completed dresses by the September 14 meeting. Mary has labels to put on the front of the dresses as well as some patterns for members to use. Suggested patterns are Simplicity 8102, 8101, 2377, 2241 or similar. No zippers, Velcro or buttons, please. Please add colorful patch pockets to the dresses. Visit dressagirlaroundtheworld.com for more information. The guild will reimburse up to $20/member to help cover the cost of materials to make the dresses.

Programming:

Tonight’s program was Non-Quilty Tools for Quilting. Tools presented included a 90-degree laser level to square up quilts, clamps for basting, hemostats and tweezers, credit card or post-it notes to use as a seam guide, a cereal box for making templates, a spoke weight or even an antique iron to weigh down rulers to keep them from slipping, and a rather medieval looking knife tool called a “pig nutter” for use as a seam ripper.

Next month will be our personal ironing station project. Lissa will send out a supply list. Susan and Mary both have wooden tray tables for $5 each. If you need one, just let us know.

The 2023 Modern Quilt Guild Make a Difference Challenge is underway. This year’s theme is “Biodiversity” and benefits the Wild Earth Allies Group. Submissions are due July 17-30. Voting is July 31 to August 4. Winners will be announced August 7. Visit TheModernQuiltGuild.com website for details.

The 2024 QuiltCon challenges have been announced. Quilt entries will be open from September 1 to October 31. Visit QuiltCon.com/challenges/ for additional details. These quilts may be any size up to a maximum of 110” per side.

Maximalism Exhibit: Make a “maximalist” quilt. This is a juried exhibit, but not judged.

The AP&Q Super Scrappy challenge: Quilts must use at least 30 different fabrics in the quilt top.

Windham Artisan Cotton Challenge: Quilters may use 3-6 of the colors in the palette to create their quilt. No other fabric, neutrals, etc. may be used on the quilt top or binding.

Summer Sew-in for fun on 7/22 at the Dublin Library 9am to 6pm.  Lissa will bring her oven mitt die and the blocks from the COSI event for anyone that may want to help put them together into a quilt top. Feel free to bring your own project, sew all day, or just visit for a while.
