Programming:
Lissa introduced a Color Challenge at the January meeting. Use the Pantone color of the year, Viva Magenta, and the paint chip you pulled. (if you have not yet picked up a paint chip, you can just choose a second color to use for your challenge project). Make whatever project you want using these two colors predominantly in your piece. You may add other colors and use solids or prints. Finished projects with be presented at the June 8 meeting.
The COSI Science Festival was a hit! Many thanks to all who participated, especially to Lissa for organizing our booth and to Ricky for arranging for us to participate. Our booth put the A in STEAM (Science, technology, Engineering, Art and Math). Visitors made quilt blocks using shapes cut with the AccuQuilt Go Me machines. Many chose to take home their creations, but we have enough that people donated to make a community quilt to donate to COSI. Quilt Beginnings and Bernina loaned us a transparent sewing machine so visitors could see the inner workings of a machine. Lissa created some 3D models of the needle mechanism as well.
Nancy Crow has invited us to visit her barn on May 17 1-3:30pm. We will set up a carpool for this event for those who would like to participate as parking will be limited.
The Great WI Quilt Show Modern Mini challenge is accepting entries through May 9. At 6pm EDT Quilts must be no more than 24” square. Go to QuiltShow.com/ModernMiniQuiltChallenge for information on how to enter. You need not send the quilt. Just email a high-resolution image.
The 2023 Modern Quilt guild Make a Difference Challenge is underway. This year’s theme is “Biodiversity” and benefits the Wild Earth Allies Group. Submissions are due July 17-30. Voting is July 31-Aug 4. Winners will be announced August 7. Visit TheModernQuiltGuild.com website for more information.
Lissa scheduled a Sew-In at the Dublin Library on 7/22. This is just for fun, but she will bring her oven mitt die for those who would like to make oven mitts. We’ll also have the blocks from the COSI event to make into a quilt top. Feel free to bring your own project or just join us to socialize.
Charity:
We have decided to go ahead with the Dress A Girl Around the World program to make dresses for girls in need. Mary provided some patterns we can use for the project and now has the labels. Mary would like to have 30 completed dresses to send off this fall. Suggested patterns are Simplicity 8102, 8101, 2377, 2241 or similar. No zippers, velcro or buttons, please. Please add colorful patch pockets to the dresses. Visit dressagirlaroundtheworld.com for more information. We can work on dresses together at the June 10 sew-in at the Dublin Library. It was suggested that we allow $300 to help with the cost of the project. This is to cover the cost of the labels, shipping of the dresses, patterns and fabric. The guild will re-imburse up to $20/member to help cover the cost of materials to make the dresses. Trish motioned to allow the $300 for the project, Lissa seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously.
Other Charity projects that may be of interest include the Amina’s Dream Project which supplies feminine hygiene products to girls so they have the supplies they need and can attend school even while menstruating. If you would like to donate fabric scraps, please bring them to the next meeting for Trish to collect. Fabric must be 100% cotton, no faces or animals (except butterflies) please. Scraps should be at least 9” square.
The Sewing Hive is hosting Sewing For Good events on May 20, July 29 and Oct 7, 2-5pm to make Chemo Caps. Visit SewingHive.com/events for more information.
