In-person meeting at Sew to Speak with 18 in attendance.
Sew to Speak is now under new ownership. Eva who is one of the new owners along with her wife, Amy, introduced herself and gave us an update on what is happening at the store. Anita will stay on as Manager. Eva invited us to join their First Thursday Night Stitch Club for hand stitching of any kind on the 1st Thursday of the month 6-9pm. Please register if you would like to attend. There is no cost, but they would like to know how many to plan for. They are planning to set up a free little library of crafting/sewing books soon. Check their website for more upcoming events and classes.
Treasurer’s Report: Current balance is $5,904.08. NQD luncheon brought in $750 for raffle tickets and $1,675 for the silent auction.
Fund Raising: It was decided that we will not try to do another fundraiser in 2023. We plan to create a community quilt for QuiltCon 2024 and make a second quilt of the same pattern, but possibly a different color way, to raffle off as a 2024 fundraiser.
National Quilt Day luncheon Overall our event was a success. We did make a small profit from additional raffle ticket sales and the silent auction. We learned a lot about organizing and producing such a large event and are pleased with how this turned out even with a few bumps in the road.
Programming: Lissa introduced a Color Challenge at the January meeting. Use the Pantone color of the year, Viva Magenta, and the paint chip you pulled. (If you have not yet picked up a paint chip, contact Lissa directly). Make whatever project you want using these two colors predominantly in your piece. You may add other colors and use solids or prints. Finished projects with be presented at the June 8 meeting.
The COSI Science Festival is quickly approaching. We will have a sew-in on 4/22 at the Bexley library 10:30-5:30 to prep the materials for our booth at the festival on 5/6. Cassandra will be giving a lecture on “Courageous Color” at the Worthington CoHatch on 5/4. We could use some volunteers to help set-up and tear-down that evening. The main event will be SciFest held at COSI downtown on 5/6 11-5. We will have a booth with 2 tables for our projects and a display on the Science of Math and Geometry. Visitors will be able to make their own quilt blocks. We plan to let everyone make 2 so they can take one home and make one for us to keep, eventually putting them together a community made quilt for display. Quilt Beginnings has loaned us a transparent sewing machine so visitors can see the inner workings of a machine. Lissa has created some 3D models of the needle mechanism as well. And AccuQuilt is providing 2 AccuQuilt GO! ME cutters for use at the festival.
Nancy Crow has invited us to visit her barn on May 17 1-3:30pm. We will set up a carpool for this event for those who would like to participate as parking will be limited.
The 4/10/23 email from The Modern Quilt Guild includes a link to a tutorial on Steph Skardal’s new app A Quilty Solid.
Charity Project: Mary introduced the Dress A Girl program. We’ll be making dresses for girls in need around the world. This is a great opportunity for us to use our talents for a good cause. Mary would like to have 30 completed dresses to send off this Fall. She will order the labels. Suggested patterns are Simplicity 8102, 8101, 2377, 2241 or similar. No zippers or buttons, please. Please add colorful patch pockets to the dresses. Visit dressagirlaroundtheworld.com for more information.
