January 11, 2024 – 17 in attendance at the Old Worthington Library.

We started the meeting with introductions and an ice breaker: What is your favorite sewing memory?

President’s Report:

Meeting Space: Reminder that our February meeting will be held at the Northwest Library, 2280 Hard Rd, Columbus, OH 43235. We are still looking for a more permanent home for our monthly meetings.

Guild Liability Insurance – Our liability insurance premium for 2024 will be due soon. It was $350 in 2023. Lanakila moved to approve the guild to pay up to $400 to continue our liability insurance in 2024. Lissa seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously.

National MQG Resources: A reminder that all members have access to themodernquitlguild.com website which has great resources. A couple items of note under On-Demand Education; Value of Quilts Panel Discussion and Modern Traditionalism. Both of these videos are currently available to members on the National Guild’s website

QuiltCon Is offering a streaming lecture pass this year. All 28 lectures will be live-streamed, and replays will be available until March 4, 2024. If you can’t make it to Raleigh, but want to attend virtually, this is a great option. Go to themodernquiltguild.com for more information and to register.

Our Community Quilt will be displayed next month at QuiltCon and has already been purchased by the designer herself, Linda. Proceeds will go to local charities in Raleigh. Thank you to all who participated in making the quilt.

Congratulations to members who had individual quilts accepted into the 2024 QuiltCon show including Lissa’s entry of the COSI quilt which she, Anne and Lissa’s son, Lucas put together from the blocks created by the community at the COSI Science Fair in May. Look for that one in the group projects category.

Treasurer’s Report:

Current balance is $5323. We paid a $250 deposit to hold our space for the November Retreat and Cynthia will be paying our National guild dues soon with money from the treasury.

If you have not yet paid your 2024 dues, please do that ASAP. We will need to submit our roster to the national guild soon. 2024 dues remain at $45 for the year. This is the same amount the National MQG charges for individual memberships. Dues can be paid via Venmo, PayPal, check or cash. Credit cards can be accepted at meetings and there is now a link on the website to pay via PayPal. If you know someone who would like to join, but needs financial assistance for the dues, please contact Linda or Cynthia through the guild email.

Programming:

Kathy Faust is hosting a Hand Work sewing circle at her home on the first Thursday of each month during the day. If you would like to join, please contact Kathy directly or through the guild email address, CentralOhioMQG@gmail.com.

Mark your calendars for National Quilt Day in Amish Country. Patty is making arrangements for a combined event with the Northeast Ohio MQG in Amish Country on National Quilt Day, 03/16/2024. We will meet up with the NE Ohio MQG in the afternoon. Come early and shop at some of the many quilt shops in the area. Meeting time space will be finalized soon. More details to come.

2024 Retreat – Plans for a 2024 retreat at the Berlin Grande Hotel in Berlin, OH are underway. The dates for the retreat are November 10-13, 2024. A flyer was shared at the meeting and also emailed to the guild. Members are asked to send a non-refundable fee of $50 to the guild by 2/29/2024 to secure your spot. If you need to cancel, this amount is non-refundable, but you may “sell” your spot to someone else if need be. Everyone will need to make their own hotel reservations. There is a block of rooms for $129/night. Call 330-403-3050 and request a room with the Central Ohio MQG block for this reduced rate. Rooms include 2 queen beds, a refrigerator and microwave. The Berlin Grande allows for free cancellation up to 30 days prior. If you would like help with a roommate match, please contact the guild at CentralOhioMQG@gmail.com and let us know. We’ll try to connect you with another member who would like a roommate as well. If there are open spots remaining after 2/29/2024 we’ll open the retreat to non-guild members. The charge to non-members will be $75. Of course anyone who joins the guild prior to signing up for the retreat will not only get the $25 discount on the retreat, but also all of the member benefits for both the National MQG and the Central Ohio chapter for 2024.

Tonight’s programming: Fold it – Snip it – Rip it – Drop it – Pass it fabric swap. We all had a lot of fun and left with 8 pieces of fabric ranging in size from ½ yard to about 4”x2” piece. Your challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to make something using your swap fabrics and bring that to the April meeting.

We wrapped up the meeting with show and tell.

Hello Jeff, if you are still interested in donating fabric, The Sewing Hive is doing a project for charity. They are making washable pads for underprivileged women and girls. If you’re interested in donating, please email me and I can arrange a drop off.
